The most interesting race in Oscar Nominations 2018 is definitely the Best Picture nominations. The list of 24 nomination category has been released via live stream broadcasting from Samuel Goldwyn Theatre. The 90th Academy will be held in 4 March 2018 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood. there are nine films entering Best Picture race. Here is the list along with everything you should know about the Best Picture nominated films.
1.Call Me By Your Name
The film is directed by the Luca Guadagno. The leading cast are the Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer. The film is about gay romance of a teenage boy who get in love with his father’s male research assistant. The sensuality and gay romance is the key point of this movie. Though only get US$ 9.5 million of revenue, the movie has incredibly joined the race.
2. Darkest Hour
The movie which is directed by Joe Wright has put Gary Oldman as the Winston Churchill during the second WWII along with Kristin Scott Thomas and Ben Mendelsohn. The film is about political battle and a unique statesmanship of Churchill as he has to deal with dilemma of negotiating Hitler or fighting him. However, the film is considered to have a better chance in Best Actor due to Oldman.
Christopher Nolan has put the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940 in the superb film production. Sir Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, Sir Mark Rylance have greatly performed leading roles in this movie. This epic movie is actually nominated in 8 categories and a strong contender in Best Picture race. The movie shares the same time setting with the Darkest Hours.
4. Get out
The new genius Jordan Peele has successfully directed Get Out and bringing the next level horror which is respected by Academy voters. It’s actually an achievement as the Academy don’t usually put the genre in nomination. The film is considered smart, scary, and nightmare due to critics. It also bring positive message about interracial relation and has great casts including Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, and Bradley Whitford.
5. The Lady Bird
The movie is about mother-daughter conflict and teenage drama. Greta Gerwig, the director, has been nominated in the Best Director race along with Jordan Peele and is the fifth female nominated in this category. Timothee Chalamet also makes appearance in this beautiful movie. However, it hard to say that the best picture will be rewarded to the Lady Bird.
6. Phantom thread
Paul Thomas Anderson has directed Daniel Day-Lewis to be a London dressmaker who’s in love with a young woman. The film is both soul cramping and style dwelling. Day-Lewis gain a positive response from the critics and make this film has a better chance of Best Actor than Best Picture.
7. The Post
The senior actor and actress, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep played as the publisher and editor in the setting of Washington Post in 70s. The film is about dilemma of publishing the Pentagon Papers where the dark secret of the involvement of America in Vietnam War revealed. Steven Spielberg has managed to provide inconvenient perspective of US political history in a very entertaining screenplay. Best picture is the place for this movie.
8. The Shape of Water
The film has managed to lead the race in the 13 Oscar Nominations 2018. The story is about the mute janitor of a secret experiment facility who falls in love with an amphibian creature, Merman. This sci-fi fairytale film shows romance, thriller, sensuality yet fantasy at the same screenplay. Guillermo del Toro has put this movie to be a very strong candidate to win Best Picture.
9. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri
The story is very strong, well-written, and actually a modern classic due to critics. The revenge drama of a grieving mother is the center of the plot. She intends to spur the police into action through advertising and provocative messages in Billboard. Martin McDonagh has beautifully directed the movie to have a strong stance on Best Picture.
Even though we have 9 nominated films in the screenplay only three movies which seem to have more chances to win. However, just like the nomination release, as usual, Oscar 2018 always gives surprises and snubs. Make sure that you don’t miss 90th Academy Oscar 2018 on 4 March 2018.
